This show is a LOVE LETTER to my MOM. Everything good in me is because of her.
This show is also dedicated to TBI survivors.
How do you start life over again, with no frame of reference to the past? Self Again is my true story showing just that. This site is an information place for every cast that stages this show. Also, a wicked cool insight into the show for entertainment, marketing and public relations. At 24 years old, Jan 4, 1995, my Traumatic Brain Injury and Retrograde Amnesia was a result of a near-fatal car accident. You will see what life with a TBI can be and shown Amnesia in a way that’s never been seen. Myths about TBI will be busted; common things will be understood better. The raw underbelly of human frailty and strength will be on display. The first staging of the show, within this show-Silent Thoughts, was staged at Henry Ford Community College (now Henry Ford College), in Dearborn Michigan, in 1998. It was my first-time writing, directing, and producing a play.
This started while I was watching the Tony Awards in 2019. Out of nowhere, the thought of putting my story to stage, with song, started writing itself in my head. While I was writing notes and jotting down structures, I joined several groups on facebook about writing musicals, composing, lyrics, and the finances and business behind a show. I would also look into putting this website together. There are many specific references that any cast would need to know, in order to be comfortable and confident pulling off.
It would be 4 years of meeting people, online, and working with a few to start putting together the show. Every time I came to a no response from someone that said yes to working with me, or playing games with me having meetings and me doing “homework” to finish for the next meeting; or after starting to work on something for the show, telling me they can’t anymore because they feel bad about themselves working on it. Two of all the composers that I met with and talked and signed paperwork for, had PHENOM resume. They worked on Broadway already, one had worked with numerous people in the music industry; the Beastie Boys were a name on their resume.
I could have chosen to look at this all as a negative, “why me?” attitude. I chose to see this as the universe telling me, these are not the people you are supposed to work with; they are still out there, don’t give up. And the universe not only gifted me the right people, they live withing the same city. It was worth the wait to find people with the right attitude of wanting to do this, but said one important word in regard to this, “excited” to work with me. Along the way I have learned the structure of writing lyrics. Also, not to rush things, time or people. Meaning, that when it’s done, it’s the right time, in the universe to make it happen and push forward to Broadway.
Even though all the people in this show are my friends and family, I still wanted to interview them for their dialogue. I wouldn’t have done this show justice, unless I had their thoughts and reflections for the real and raw of their part.
